This is a good example of the color variations in some redwood. The boards that have both colors, “white” (sapwood) and “red” (heartwood), are a slightly lower grade of redwood. All heartwood with no knots is the highest grade of redwood. With proper maintenance both can be protected against the elements and last an equal amount of time. Clear all heart redwood has much less color variation although there are still variation to be seen. Sometimes these variations are not evident until after you have cleaned the wood.
